Kontapel was named after the Pelekh brothers, who in 2018 discovered a batch of Kontabas that had been maturing since 1993, along with the recipe for the drink, in a village in the Zakarpattia region. They purchased over 90 litres of Kontabas, blended it, and bottled it for sale in 400 bottles.Kontabas is an ancient Ukrainian drink made from a specially prepared distillate and aged in glass cubes with freshly cut blackcurrant buds. As the buds can naturally only be harvested once a year, the production of the drink is very labour-intensive and costly. To make 10 bottles, nearly 5 litres of buds must be collected, and the harvest takes place only over four days each year.
This hard work is rewarded by the truly divine taste and aroma of Kontabas. As early as the 17th century, wealthy Ukrainian nobles gladly made this drink for themselves and rarely sold it to outsiders.
